World Sushi Cup® Japan 2022 took place at Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market Toyosu Market on Friday, January 20th and Saturday, January 21st. World Sushi Cup® Japan welcomes non-Japanese Sushi chefs to demonstrate their highly skilled food sanitation management and cooking techniques for the chance to be crowned the world’s top Sushi chef. In 2022, World Sushi Cup® Japan celebrated its 10th anniversary with 19 contestants from 12 countries. The Edo-mae Sushi Open Competition on the 20th was divided into three sessions, Shikomi (preparation), Otsukuri (raw-fish), and Nigiri (hand-pressed) to evaluate each contestant’s basic cooking procedures and techniques. Of the 19 contestants competing on the first day, 15 were chosen to advance to the Creative Sushi Open Competition on the next day, and they competed for the title of world's best.

The Regional Qualifying Tournaments (Europe, North America, Asia) held between October and December, and the Online Qualifying Tournament determined six finalists of the 10th Washoku World Challenge. The finalists will participate in the Final Tournament scheduled to be held in Tokyo on February 27th and 28th, 2023.

This year, the Washoku World Challenge celebrates its landmark 10th year.

On February 17, 2022, a reception party sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries inviting media and food industry affiliates was held at the Japan Society in New York. The reception was held to take advantage of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) deactivation of import measures on Japanese food products associated with radioactive materials based on scientific evidence in September of last year.

Due to the worldwide spread of infectious diseases, we have decided to cancel the final tournament in Tokyo. As the result, we offered the special live-streaming online lessons by three top Japanese chefs to the six finalists.

For this year's Washoku World Challenge "Goho - Five methods", 15 participants who had passed the document screening submitted their cooking and presentation videos. In the meeting of video screening, judges carefully reviewed the videos to determine the 6 finalists.

Currently, Japanese Food Supporter Stores around the world are promoting Japanese ingredients in a variety of ways.

This year's Washoku World Challenge "Goho - Five methods" attracted 150 participants from 39 countries and regions around the world for the online document screening.

It has been decided that the 9th Washoku World Challenge, which sees chefs of Japanese cuisine and culinary students from all over the world, will host its qualifying tournaments heats online, with the final to be held in Tokyo.

In 2020, the Washoku World Challenge was held online, and participants with an interest in Japanese cuisine were welcomed from all over the world, resulting in the passionate participation of 199 people from 41 countries and regions.
Amongst them, 15 participants passed the first stage document screening, and 6 finalists were selected during the second stage video screening held in December.
As a bonus, the 6 finalists will have the opportunity to attend an online private lecture by a Japanese chef.

For 2020, the Washoku World Challenge was held online this year. As a result of inviting contestants from around the globe, 199 passionate entries from 41 countries and regions worldwide were brought together for the first stage of the contest, paper screening.
