Notice That We Are Now Accepting Applications for the 9th Washoku World Challenge
It has been decided that the 9th Washoku World Challenge, which sees chefs of Japanese cuisine and culinary students from all over the world, will host its qualifying tournaments heats online, with the final to be held in Tokyo.
The “Washoku World Challenge” is a Japanese cuisine contest organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan for non-Japanese chefs who are deeply interested in Japanese cuisine and who are eager to improve their skills and knowledge.
This website has also reported on the qualifying tournaments and finale of the past Washoku World Challenges, with last year's event seeing a significant change in how the event was held due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Washoku World Challenge was changed to a rank-free, online-based competition of international Japanese chefs, chefs who are interested in Japanese cuisine and food culture, and students aiming to become chefs.

In consideration of the continuing COVID-19 infections, the forthcoming 9th Washoku World Challenge will continue to hold qualifying tournaments online, and the final tournament will take place in Tokyo, as before, to determine who comes out on top. The theme of this year's Washoku World Challenge is “Goho ‐ Five methods.” Using the five core cooking methods of Japanese cuisine, “Nama” (cutting), “Niru” (simmering), “Yaku” (grilling), “Musu” (steaming), and “Ageru” (deep-frying), the participants will go back to the roots of what makes Washoku wonderful to bring out the very best possible taste the ingredients have to offer in order to serve up their finest dishes and take home the crown of Japanese cuisine.
