Taste of Japan in Sydney: Adam Liaw showcases simple Japanese food at home for Australians

Culinary seminar on making authentic Japanese dishes at home

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) hosted a culinary seminar on Monday, 9 and Tuesday 10 May at the Sydney Seafood School in the Sydney Fish Market to showcase how easy it is to make delicious authentic Japanese food at home for Australian consumers.

The seminar included a live demonstration from Adam Liaw, cook, author, 2010 MasterChef Australia winner and host of the television series Destination Flavour, along with Hideo Dekura, Japanese cook, author and lecturer. Both Liaw and Dekura have been appointed as Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassadors by MAFF.

Liaw and Dekura engaged an eager audience of 54 Australian consumers with a 90 minute, interactive demonstration on the proper way to prepare Japanese rice, making miso soup complete with dashi (broth), a teriyaki of Japanese yellowtail from Ehime prefecture and grilled Japanese scallops from Hokkaido prefecture, answering questions from the audience along the way. Attendees also had an opportunity to sit down and have a bite with Liaw and Dekura for a tasting of the menu featured in the demonstration, paired with two different Japanese sakes.

The seminar is a part of the ministry’s ongoing Taste of Japan campaign , which also features a television commercial airing on SBS One and the National Geographic channel, in Australia, also featuring Liaw.
